Alas! upon some starry height, The Gods of Excellence to please, This hand of mine will never smite The Harp of High Serenities. Mere minstrel of the street am I, To whom a careless coin you fling; But who, beneath the bitter sky, Blue-lipped, yet insolent of eye, Can shrill a song of Spring; A song of merry mansard days, The cheery chimney-tops among; Of rolics and of roundelays When we were young . . . when we were young; A song of love and lilac nights, Of wit, of wisdom and of wine; Of Folly whirling on the Heights, Of hunger and of hope divine; Of Blanche, Suzette and Celestine, And all that gay and tender band Who shared with us the fat, the lean,

Service wrote a large amount of notes and diary-like pages I n Paris. In this book he included such notes, useing fictitious names and editing. I believe they reflect his thoughts with accuracy and they are superb writing as is much of the poetry. He captures the atmosphere of remarkable times and places!Product details

Ballads of a Bohemian Robert W Service 9781517622473 Books Reviews
Robert Service went to Paris in the early twentieth century and lived amongst young writers and artists of other media, many of whom we now consider famous. During this residence he was caught up in the first world war. This book of verses is about that experience.
The rhymer is clearly on his game during this period showing his abilities in describing people, situations and landscapes. This volume is most engaging, even enchanting. His deep empathy for the human situation is clear as is his ability to see humor and beauty in everyday things, even at war.
Highly recommended.

I purchased 2 separate copies of this book. Both orders were filled quickly and response from was good. Both copies are in reasonably good condition considering they date from 1921 (used books).Covers are firm, pages in good shape. Prices were also reasonable.
Im amazed that the editing process did not discover that all the poems are missing from a book of poetry!
well, it's quite a good collection of poetry, except someone's forgotten to put all the dang poems in it!
I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF ROBERT W, SERVICE FOR YEARS. I REALLY LIKE IT.
Any book of poetry from Service gets 5 stars from me. I've read them all several times over.
